THE SCIENCE BEHIND SAFE DRIVING

The bottom line is this: lowers the freezing point water. This is how it helps keep roads clear and safer for driving so that things keep moving despite the freeze.

HOW IT WORKS

Salt is spread on the snow/ice-covered roads. When the salt and snow interacts, it slowly begins to melt into a salty water called “brine”. Brine freezes at very low temperatures so it remains a liquid for quite a while and has plenty of time to work through the snow/ice and reach the road surface.

Once the snow/ice turns into brine, vehicles can easily and safely go through it, turning the water into slush. Finally, the snow plows move the slush to the side of the road and the driveways are free to use safely.
